My small people are complete snackaholics! In the summer months when they are spending so much more time outside in the fresh air, I feel like they take snacking to a whole new level and sometimes I find it difficult to keep up with their requests! If your finding yourself in the same position as me, well, here’s your answer! Take a look at these ideas for easy kid-pleasing summer desserts that you (or they) can whip up with no more than 5 everyday ingredients. You’ll find low- and no-sugar-added options, too. It’s going to be a sweet summer!
Skewers with fresh fruit or veggies are a super healthy easy summer snack.
Seasonal fruit in a variety of colours. Such as Strawberries, mini oranges, mango, green apples, blueberries, grapes, and watermelon.
There’s something about food cut into shapes that makes it a ton of fun for kids. Place the chopped fruit onto the bamboo skewers. Use small cookie cutters to make fun shapes with melons or apples.
Fruit Smoothie Pops
Is there anything better than a sweet popsicle on a hot summer day? I don’t think so!
1 1/2 cups low-fat vanilla yogurt
1 cup sliced mango
1 (8 ounce) can pineapple chunks, undrained
1 small banana
1 orange, juiced
It couldn’t be easier! Blend the yogurt, mango, pineapple chunks with juice, banana, and orange juice in a blender until smooth. Pour into ice pop moulds (freeze until set, 4 to 6 hours) and enjoy!
Out of all the cold snacks for hot days, frozen grapes are one of the best! Not only are grapes easy to eat, but they’re also rich in energizing carbohydrates, fiber, and vitamin C.
To make frozen grapes – its super simple, just put red or green grapes in a plastic bag and pop in the freezer for a few hours. If your freezer is big enough, you can also freeze the grapes on a baking sheet instead… you could try sprinkling a packet of jelly crystals on the grapes before freezing for a super sweet treat!
Raspberry Lemonade Smoothie
Savoring a glass of lemonade is one of the best ways to cool off in the hot weather. A lemonade smoothie is just as refreshing, while providing quenching fiber and other nutrients.
1 cup of frozen raspberries
1 tbsp of lemon juice
1 tbsp of honey or maple syrup
1 cup of water
1/2 cup of plain Greek yogurt.
Combine all the above ingredients in a blender and mix until smooth. Serve in a tall glass with a wide straw and enjoy! You can adapt this recipe to use with other fruits such as strawberries too.
Frozen Banana Pops
A perfect anytime treat, these banana pops are packed with protein and fiber; yet, they’re so fun and tasty, your kids will love snacking on them!
2 organic bananas, peeled and cut in half
4 Popsicle sticks
½ cup hazelnut-chocolate spread or plain or flavored yogurt
½ cup topping of choice (see note)
Line a baking sheet with grease proof paper.
Carefully insert a popsicle stick into each banana piece. Use a butter knife to cover the banana with the nut butter or yogurt.
Place your toppings in a shallow bowl or plate. Roll the banana in the toppings, using your hands, if necessary, to make sure that the banana gets well-coated. Place the coated banana on the parchment paper; repeat with the remaining bananas.
Freeze for 3 hours. Enjoy or store in a sealed bag in the freezer for up to one week.
