Brits are sizzling!

Brits are now officially allowed to dig out their BBQs, suncream and T-shirts with above-average temperatures predicted to last until autumn!! Woo hoo I hear you cry!

Here in the UK, to say it’s roasty toasty is an understatement. We’re flipping baking! Melting, in fact! Let’s face it. Were not used to the heat. It’s rained here everyday for like 22 years straight, ( a little bit of an exaggeration but you get the picture). It’s not surprising that some of us are struggling to sleep in this heat and to keep the kids cool enough!

Well help is at hand and here’s a few of the handiest of hacks that are perfect for keeping everyone cool when there’s no air con to hand.

When the temperature’s soaring, give these a try…

Get a fan

Ok, it’s an obvious one but having a fan will help stir up a bit of a breeze – ideal for when your little one’s bedroom temperature hits 29 degrees. Just be sure not to leave them unattended and make sure little fingers can’t get near them.

For added brrr–factor, place a large bowl of ice in front and it will blow colder air in your direction.

Close the windows

Although your instinct is to open every window in the house when it’s hot, don’t! During a heatwave, it can be cooler insider than outside so you’ll be letting the hot air in. Open the windows at night when it cools down a bit and then close them in the morning before the temperatures soar.

Close blinds and curtains if the sun is shining directly in to keep rooms as cool as possible.

Drink plenty

Drinking water frequently keeps you hydrated and feeling cooler. Have a jug or bottle to hand and make sure everyone’s sipping something regularly.

If you find water boring, try adding mint leaves, orange, lemon or cucumber slices to your water makes it more refreshing. If it has more flavour, you’ll drink more of it and stay cooler in the process!

Cool down with a cuppa

Believe it or not, there is research that suggests drinking hot drinks can help cool you down just as effectively as cold drinks. Try a green tea or herbal tea if you’re craving a brew!

Make your own cool spray

While products like Magicool can help cool you down in seconds, don’t panic if you don’t have any in the house to hand. Make your own cold spritz by using any spray bottle filled with water and maybe a squeeze of lemon or cucumber for that refreshing feel and keep it in the fridge.

Soak your feet

Take five minutes to “chill“. The body radiates heat from the hands, feet, face and ears, so cooling any of these will efficiently cool the body. Can’t quite get to a pool? Fear not – soaking your feet in a bucket of cold water will do the trick nicely. Kids’ paddling pools are great for cooling down little (and big!) feet, too!

Try adding a dash of Peppermint, it has an invigorating impact on both the skin and muscles and can reduce inflammation bringing relief to sore and tired feet.
